About Stands for Sound
Stands for Sound is based in Western Australia and was established in late 2020 by Iain Johnson.
In 2019 Iain became interested in learning to play the guitar, so he asked a friend guitarist for advice. His friend lent him one of his guitars to make sure it was his thing before Iain invested in his own instrument.
To repay his kindness for helping him, Iain wanted to buy him a nice stand for his Gibson guitar. Being unable to find a suitable stand in the shop or online, Iain designed and made his first stand.
Since then Iain has designed and made a number of stands to suit a number of stringed instruments.
Iain has been working with wood for over 20 years.
Moving from England to Australia in 1988 he shortly afterwards met his wife. Having little money and now a family it seemed only natural to start and make simple furniture for his own house.
Initially born out of necessity, working with timber has now become a passion. He has had the pleasure of making furniture not only for my family and friends but also for non-profit organisations.
About our Stands
These stands were initially designed for acoustic guitars but have now emerged to include other stringed instruments such as violins and ukuleles and Banjo’s as well as other stringed instruments as they are requested.
The Design
Our intention for each stand is that it should be pleasing to the eye and a place to rest your instrument.
They are a piece of art that will complement your instrument when it is resting in the stand but will also look magnificent on its own.
The stands are handcrafted from both Australian and imported timbers chosen for their complementary grain and colour. The timbers are colour matched to create beautiful, subtle, or contrasting effect.
Most stands include an inlay and pinstripe of timbers that complement the main feature timber, this inlay is carried through into the neck of the stands. Plain stands without the inlay are also available
It is most important to us that we create a stand that is unique to you, complements your instrument, matches surroundings and is aesthetically pleasing to you.
Something extra in the design…
Besides being pleasing to look at, we try where possible, to incorporate a story or feature with each stand.
Currently there are two neck designs, a “swan neck” and a “snake like” shape.
The “swan neck” is of course shaped like the swan’s neck; and in the base we include wood weaving to represent the ripples in the water as the swan moves through it.
The “snake – like” stand arose because it looks like the ‘squiggly’ shape of the reptile as it moves along the ground. The base is generally oval like the head of the reptile as you look straight at it and the weaving in the base using different coloured timbers represents the natural camouflage of the reptile. This is displayed on the home page.
Other design features such as the stand displayed on the right includes a feature in the design that shows it was raining when I made the stand, this is shown by including stylized rain drops as well as flowing water indicated by the wood weaving in the base.
Protecting your instrument
Our stands carry many feature for the purpose of protecting your instrument from damage as a result of directly connecting with the timber when stored.
The neck includes a cork pad to protect the neck of your instrument from direct contact with the timber
The cradle includes a recess lined with a wool or foam pad on which the pin of your instrument can sit holding the body away from the timber and includes two back stops each having a cork or wool pad for the body to rest against.
